Hair Fall and Dandruff

Hair Fall

Hair fall can affect just the scalp or the entire body and can be temporary or permanent. It may be the result of heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions, or a normal part of aging. Anyone can lose head hair, but it is more common in men.

Baldness generally refers to excessive hair loss on the scalp. Hereditary hair loss in old age is the most common cause of baldness. Some people prefer to let hair loss run its course without treatment or concealment. Others may cover it up with hairstyles, makeup, hats, or scarves. And still others choose one of the available treatments to prevent hair loss or restore growth.

Dandruff

Dandruff is a common scalp condition characterized by the shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp. It often presents as white or yellowish flakes of skin that may be noticeable on the scalp, in the hair, or on clothing. While dandruff itself is not usually a serious medical condition, it can be embarrassing and uncomfortable for those affected.

The exact cause of dandruff is not fully understood, but several factors may contribute to its development:

  1. Malassezia: This is a type of fungus that naturally resides on the scalp of most adults. However, in some individuals, an overgrowth of Malassezia can lead to irritation and increased shedding of skin cells, resulting in dandruff.

  2. Seborrheic Dermatitis: Dandruff is often associated with seborrheic dermatitis, a common skin condition characterized by red, itchy, and flaky patches of skin, typically occurring on the scalp but sometimes affecting other oily areas of the body.

  3. Dry Scalp: Dry skin on the scalp can cause flakes similar in appearance to dandruff. Cold weather, low humidity, frequent shampooing, and certain hair care products can contribute to dry scalp.

  4. Excessive Oil Production: On the other hand, an overproduction of oil (sebum) by the sebaceous glands on the scalp can also contribute to dandruff. This excess oil can lead to the accumulation of dead skin cells and flakes.

  5. Skin Sensitivity: Some individuals may have sensitive skin that reacts to certain hair care products or environmental factors, leading to scalp irritation and dandruff.
